Rhythm and Soul for Refugees is an event to bring together the community for an afternoon of dancing and fun in support of asylum seekers. This is an all ages, volunteer run event and all proceeds will go to the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre.

The ASRC relies largely on public donations and volunteer support in order to make a difference for thousands of our community's most vulnerable members. Just by joining with us and enjoying music from some of Melbourne’s most talented funk and soul bands, you will be helping the ASRC provide health care, legal assistance, nutritious food, material aid, employment and training, counselling, case support workers, English tutoring, and a friendly, safe and respectful place for people seeking asylum in Australia.

The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra
Inspired by the infectious afro-beat music of Nigeria and its neighbours, The POAO delivers contemporary African funk to Australian dancefloors. This mammoth ensemble comprises musicians hand-picked from Melbourne’s music scene. The experience and creativity of these established musicians energises the group’s original compositions and the sound of the entire band is a force to be reckoned with. The POAO’s powerful MCs and tribal rhythms are the modern-day “musical weapon” that Fela Kuti conceived of. Their conscious lyrics and West African grooves are relevant today, while remaining faithful to the message of afro-beat.

Copperhead Brass Band
Armed with nothing but a slew of horns and percussion, Copperhead Brass Band combines elements of the loud, gritty street parties of New Orleans with the meticulously arranged sounds and beats of a hip-hop troupe. Inspired by the heavy-hitters of American brass bands such as Youngblood and the Stooges, Copperhead will bring the dance wherever they see fit.

There will be afternoon tea and refreshments provided, doors at 1:30
