Sun 6 Apr 2014

Songs for South Sudan will be held on 6th April at the Northcote Social Club.

On hearing personal accounts from family members of the atrocities occurring currently in South Sudan, singer Ajak Kwai decided to take action assembling Melbourne’s finest entertainers to program a fundraising event.

“I know so many people who are suffering,” Ajak says. “It is estimated over 2000 in my region alone and 5000 across South Sudan have been killed since December 2013. As citizens of the world we are responsible for one another. I want to reach out to Australian people to join me in supporting this cause.”

The shocking reality is that many people massacred on the streets have not been buried. There are great concerns including the risk of disease particularly as the rainy season approaches in April. Funds will assist in the re-establishment of Bor, payments for supplies at the local hospital and education fees for South Sudanese school children living in Uganda.

PERFORMANCES BY:

Jali Buba Kuyateh (Senegalese Kora Player)

Born in Sanyang, The Gambia from a traditional Griot family (career musician) of West Africa, this world-class harp player and singer composed three songs by the age of ten and now has over one hundred compositions to his name.

Kevin Kropinyeri (Indigenous Comedian)

This rising star in Australian comedy won the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s national Deadly Funny competition in 2008. A high-energy performer, Kevin is sharp, likeable, silly and measured; mixing keen observational standup with joyfully ridiculous physical comedy.

Melbourne Mass Gospel Choir (MMGC)

Passionate about the joyous and uplifting nature of gospel music, this 80 voices community choir sings a wide range of sacred music, gospel and soul, early spirituals, works from the 60‘s and 70‘s and contemporary scores. Their repertoire will focus on songs of freedom including compositions from the civil rights movement in the USA.

Ajak Kwai (South Sudanese Singer) and Friends

Singing in Arabic, Sudanese or English, witness the depth and richness of Ajak Kwai’s Dinka heritage. Music has been the vehicle for her stories of extraordinary life experiences as a refugee, exiled from her hometown. Successfully fusing her African roots with the grassroots of Australian music, she has collaborated with musicians including Sarah Blasko, Nicky Bomba, Martin Tucker and Chris Basile.
